Accountabilities: Working independently as a qualified Chinese patent agent:
• Provide timely advice to R&D and business on IP issues;
• Identify inventions and work closely with R&D to protect those inventions;
• Draft, file and prosecute patent applications and defend Syngenta's patents;
• Implementing patent strategies for R&D projects as well as commercial products;
• Advise on how to secure freedom from third party rights;
• Give IP input on contracts with third parties;
• Work closely with local stakeholders and global IP team and ensure alignment; and
• Support management of patent enforcement related activities.
Critical success factors & key challenges
• Implement the IP strategy for a wide range of products and projects to maximize the IP protection available;
• Formulate innovative ways to protect Syngenta's inventions;
• Provide accurate and complete analysis of Syngenta and third party products and IP rights with regard to Syngenta's freedom to operate and potential infringement issues;
• Proactively educating the Chinese business and R&D on IP matters and the value of IP protection and how it can add value to the business as well as the need for rigout in how this is done;
• Work closely with local stakeholders such as R&D, Marketing, Project Management teams while ensuring global IP strategy and ways of working are strictly followed.

Critical knowledge
• Good first degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry or Biology, or closely related subject with significant organic chemistry component.
• Proficiency in English (speaking, writing, reading, listening); patent drafting in English
• Desirable but not necessary: PhD in the field of organic chemistry/Chemistry/Biochemistry/Natural Sciences and/or experience dealing with natural products and fermentation technology.
Critical experience
• Demonstrated ability to deliver quality work in a timely manner
• At least 3 years of work experience in one of the leading patent firms specialized in serving foreign clients in China (I will provide a list) or a leading company in CP field.
• At least 2 years’ experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications in English.
